Amongst all the state level exam in Haryana ‘HCS’ exam is considered to be the most prestigious exam of all. The exam is conducted regularly by Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) to recruit the personnel for various administrative posts. The recruitments are made for the post of SDM, DSP, ETO, ITO and other allied services.
The HCS exam requires proper guidance for HCS. The exam is a three staged process with prelims, mains and interviews as the three stages. The eligibility criteria for exam is graduation or an equivalent course. The age criteria is (21-40) years with age relaxations levied on corresponding categories. The age limit for DSP however, is 27 years. The exam is conducted in three stages. The first stage is prelims stage which comprises of two papers of 100 marks each. Only objective type questions are asked. The first paper is of general studies which besides covering the general civic aspects of the country covers topics like History, Geography, Economy, Polity, Sciences etc. There is a strong case of Current Affairs for HCS. Besides this state specific questions typically Haryana G K for HCS is also asked. There is no negative marking. 2nd paper is of optional subject. After clearing the first stage student qualifies for mains exam. The mains exam consists of General Studies paper and two optionals which are to be chosen from the list of optional provided by the commission. There are certain combination of optionals which are prohibited. There are also compulsory Hindi and compulsory English paper. An essay paper is also the part of the mains examination mix. All these paper are subjective in nature, therefore, a lot of attention has to be paid to the answer writing skill of the student.
During preliminary the student must focus on speed and accuracy and during mains the focus should shift on in depth subject knowledge and answer working skill. The last hurdle is the interview. Viva-voce questions are asked by the panel of experts from the candidate. This is a personality test of the candidate.

Haryana Civil Services (HCS) Examination will be conducted in the month of MAY- 2014. This examination will have three stages, i.e., Prelims (Objective Type) , Mains (Subjective Type) & Interview. STAGE TWO: Mains Examination The Mains examination is divided into two, the Compulsory papers and the Optional papers.
Scientific Aspects Optional Papers: The candidates have to select any of the two optional subjects from the list of 23 subjects. The most popular, practical & scoring Humanities optional subjects have been; Psychology; Public Administration; Sociology; History; Political Science & Geography. But some combinations are not allowed, so before selecting the optional the students need to check the availability of the combinations.
